Induction Program

Shana Gibbs presents information about the Induction Program in American Sign Language.

Upon successful completion of the 9-month the IRIS Project's CORE: Initiative Program, participants were invited to further their development via the IRIS Project's Induction experience. This 150-hour hybrid (onsite and online) learning environment provided IRIS participants with the foundation and tools needed for continued self-directed and lifelong learning. This experience focused on two primary ideas: (1) participants’ connection to this work and (2) enhancing participants' employability toolkit.

Throughout the IRIS Induction, participants experienced the following:

Induction participants during summer 2023 onsite

  1. Completion of an interpreting self-analysis, including various work sample submissions;
  2. Development of an interpreting portfolio, including an updated resume and work samples;
  3. Connections with local rural deaf communities;
  4. Building autonomous professional relationships with interpreting organizations;
  5. Engagement of at least 10 hours of interpreting observation over video; and
  6. Attendance at synchronous sessions focused on the task of interpreting.

Upon completion of this program, participants were able to:

  1. Sustain a network of support with other rural interpreters;
  2. Construct an up-to-date portfolio to enhance their employability as interpreters;
  3. Integrate contemporary ethical business practices; and
  4. Differentiate the interpreting product apart from the person via an Integrated Model of Interpreting framework.
